Message of Our Rector Prof. Dr. Zekeriya Akman on April 23 National Sovereignty and Children’s Day
We commemorate the 106th anniversary of the opening of the Turkish Grand National Assembly, one of the most powerful symbols of our independence, with great pride and a profound sense of responsibility.
With the establishment of our Veteran Assembly, it was proclaimed to the world that sovereignty belongs unconditionally to the nation, laying the firm foundations of national will and independence on these lands.
April 23, 1920, stands as a historic milestone shaped by faith, courage, and a shared vision. It marks the declaration that no authority stands above the will of the nation, and that we will continue our journey towards full independence with determination, without ever compromising our unity and solidarity.
That this meaningful day was dedicated to children reflects a strong belief in the future. It symbolizes nurturing hope, building tomorrow together, and passing on the consciousness of nationhood from one generation to the next. Raising our children with knowledge, conscience, and a sense of responsibility remains our greatest assurance for a strong, just, and prosperous future.
With these sentiments, I respectfully commemorate, with gratitude and reverence, especially Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the First Speaker of the Grand National Assembly, along with all the heroes of our War of Independence and our cherished martyrs. I extend my heartfelt congratulations on the National Sovereignty and Children’s Day to our nation and to all children, and wish that this meaningful occasion brings peace and well-being to children all around the world.
